        What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a term used to describes an injury to the neck when a sudden and forceful movement occurs to the head. These movements can be to the front, back or side and can be due to a road traffic accident, forceful trauma in sport or even a sudden slip or fall. It is not uncommong for whiplash symptoms to be noticed hours or even days after the actual event.

        What causes whiplash?

When a sudden unexpected force occurs on the neck the body is unable to brace for this and there the movement of the head is uncontrolled. Due to this fast movement it causes ligaments and muscles to be stretched or slightly torn. It also causes the joints in and around the neck to either be compressed or gapped. These issues in turn cause pain and stiffness in the neck and can also cause pain into other areas of the body.

        Symptoms.

Symptoms for whiplash include but are not limited to:

        • Restriction in movements into the neck
        • Stiffness in the muscles of the neck
        • Pain in the neck centrally or to one side
        • Pain referring down the outside of the arm
        • Pain inside the joints of the neck
        • Pain across the top of the shoulders or down the spine
