Shockwave for Aesthetics
Shockwave therapy for aesthetic enhancements
What is shockwave therapy for aesthetics?
Shockwave therapy is an effective, non-invasive and painless procedure for achieving a smoother, trimmer, more toned appearance to your skin. It is clinically proven to enhance and support the effects of body contouring or other fat-reduction treatments.
With shockwave therapy there is no need for surgery, or time off work. Sessions are easy, safe and pain-free, with results visible after only two weeks.
What is shockwave therapy suitable for?
Shockwave therapy helps stimulate collagen formation and strengthen connective tissue. This reparative process with skin tightening and can also break down scar tissue.
Shockwave therapy helps to reduce fat by breaking down the connective fibrous walls that hold stubborn fat and toxins below the skin.
Shockwave therapy increases the blood flow to the area, thereby stimulating cellular metabolism and the exchange of blood lipids, inducing the production of new collagen and elastin fibres and stimulating blood and lymph circulation. This results in more defined and smoother skin and a reduced appearance of cellulite.
Improved lymphatic drainage
Shockwave therapy helps to improve lymphatic drainage, which flushes broken-down fat and toxins from the body.
Shockwave therapy can also treat more serious conditions such as foot, joint and shoulder pain. Read our dedicated Shockwave treatment page
How does shockwave therapy work?
Shockwave (or acoustic wave) therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to stimulate fat breakdown, collagen synthesis and lymphatic drainage in the targeted area. This procedure uses high-energy acoustic shockwaves to create vibrations in the soft tissues, effectively rejuvenating and remodelling the skin from within by increasing collagen production and improving skin elasticity.
During your initial consultation, your practitioner will discuss your areas of concern with you and help you develop a plan tailored towards achieving your goals.
During the procedure, a particular device emits high-intensity pulses of shockwave energy into targeted areas of the skin. These powerful pulses perform several functions beneath the skin; it stimulates collagen, breaks down fat and enhances blood and lymph circulation. The treated cells are then flushed away through the natural lymphatic system of the body, leaving behind improved smoothness, texture, elasticity, and tightening of the skin.
You may continue to see improved results for up to 3 months after treatment but this can vary depending on your lifestyle, external and internal factors, and genetic predispositions. However, most clients experience considerable improvement in problem areas of the skin within two weeks of treatment.
Depending on the number and size of areas being treated, the shockwave treatment process takes around 10 – 15 minutes from start to finish.
How long does shockwave therapy take to work?
Most patients see visible improvements just two weeks after treatment begins. Exercise and plentiful hydration can produce even better results.
How many treatments of shockwave therapy are needed?
The number of treatments you need will very much depend on the results you wish to see. Your progress will be closely monitored, and your course duration will be adjusted accordingly. A typical course of shockwave treatments is 6-12 individual sessions of 15-minute duration but this can be determined by your specific goals.
Does shockwave therapy hurt?
Shockwave treatment is painless, and there are no side effects. The vibrations can feel stronger over specific body areas but many clients say the treatment feels similar to a sports massage.
Although after-effects are rare, some clients report mild redness, bruising and slight swelling after shockwave treatment. These are mild and can last up to 48 hours post treatment. However, most clients do not suffer any post-treatment discomfort.
As shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure there is no downtime. You should be able to return to all normal activities immediately after treatment.
